Global Villager Activity Tips
Here are some tips on obtaining and sharing information about a global villager.
Review the “Sample Global Villager Posting” This provides an example of the type of information you can
provide in your first entry for the villager you represent.
1. A number of Web sites might be helpful in finding out the basic information about your villager
that is requested in Lesson 1. These sites include the following:
● CIA World Factbook
● World Newspapers Online
● Names from Around the World
● Global Voices Online
● NationMaster
● “The Economist” Topics Page (use the alphabetized list to find information on your
country or city)
● New York Times (select region at the upper right area of page, then select country under
“Times Topics News by Country”)
● National Geographic People and Places
● New York Times topics (search for the country you represent)
The CIA World Factbook provides much of the information requested for Module 1. You can get potential
names for your villager for the second and third resources and general information about your country
and its culture from the other resources.
You might also try to contact someone with a similar background to your global villager on the Internet,
possibly through “Facebook,” “MySpace,” or some other social networking site.
For your initial global villager posting, you could copy and paste the following headings in your posting
and then add relevant information to them:

Name:
Age:
Sex:
City and country of residence:
Ethnicity:
Religion:
Life expectancy:
Language:
Annual income (purchasing power parity):
Occupation:
Nature of communication with others:
Nature of transportation used:

When looking for how a particular revolution affects the person you represent in the global village and that
person’s country of origin, you could find appropriate information in the following ways:
1. Use information that you come upon in completing learning activities in the unit or sections
associated with that revolution;
2. Use the Web sites listed above, particularly the CIA World Factbook;
3. Use a search engine such as Google to search for information about the country you represent
and the revolution or trend (for example, you might use Google and search for “population
Afghanistan” and “urbanization Afghanistan”).
4. Use specific rather than broad terms as the basis for a search in Google or another search
engine. For example, you would likely find better information searching for “Afghanistan energy”
and “Afghanistan water” than searching with “Afghanistan resource management.”
